Battlefield 4 launching on October 29, both it and Destiny coming to Xbox One
May 21st

Battlefield 4 has announced via its Facebook page that the game will launch on October 29 of this year. In addition to versions on the PC, Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4, the team has also confirmed the game will be coming to Microsoft’s newly announced Xbox One console. The Xbox One doesn’t have a confirmed launch date just yet, so it’s possible that version will arrive later.
Additionally, EA’s announced Battlefield 4‘s first expansion pack, called China Rising. The pack will contain four extra maps, along with extra vehicles and weapons. It will be available at launch, and come free with any pre-order of the game.
And speaking of confirmed Xbox One titles, Bungie has also made it clear that Destiny is due out on Xbox One as well. Stay tuned for more confirmations on next-gen titles for Microsoft’s new console.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” is as useful a phrase as it is folksy, and though the Xbox One is a complete reinvention compared to the Xbox 360, the controller is in many ways little changed. It’s a bit more rounded, a bit softer to the touch and features redesigned shoulder buttons with their own discrete rumble controllers. The D-Pad is revised, the analog sticks has more texture and the battery backpack is no longer quite as pronounced. In other words, we think it’s going to be great. Check out our gallery of comparison shots in the gallery below!

May 21st

Microsoft’s minty-fresh Xbox One will be unable to play Xbox 360 discs, nor will your multitude of Xbox Live Arcade purchases transfer to the new machine, our friends at Engadget have learned.
The incompatibility is due to the fact that the Xbox One runs on x86 processor architecture, whereas the Xbox 360 ran on PowerPC. This fundamental difference in hardware architecture prevents the Xbox One from natively running Xbox 360 games, regardless of how powerful the thing may be.
“We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future,” a Microsoft representative told Engadget. Part of that investment will transfer, however: Your Xbox Live Gamerscore.
Earlier this year, Sony also announced that it’s PlayStation 4 will make the jump to a processor built on the x86 platform.

May 21st

It’s true: the Xbox One will not play your Xbox 360 game discs, nor will your Xbox Live Arcade games transfer (not to mention any other content that’s dependent on the 360′s hardware architecture, anyhow). That Gamerscore you’ve been earning, though? That’s gonna transfer.
Sadly, due to the x86 architecture of the Xbox One, the PowerPC-based 360 titles simply won’t run on the hardware. Microsoft’s not super worried about consumer reaction, though, telling Engadget, “We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future,” a Microsoft rep told us. That said, Xbox One is designed, “to play an entirely new generation of games — games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud.”
We got a glimpse at some of those new games this afternoon, but we expect to see much more at E3 in a few weeks.

May 21st

Despite its multiplatform status, Call of Duty is almost synonymous with Xbox. It’s no surprise then, that Microsoft’s new platform, the Xbox One, will be the first next-gen system to digest Call of Duty: Ghosts’ DLC. This isn’t too much of a surprise, of course — the Xbox 360 also boasted a first-out-the-door spolicy with the series’ DLC. Still, a big score for Microsoft, one significant enough to serve as the closing announcement of its Xbox One launch event. Activision’s publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg went on to reveal the game’s first official trailer, assuring fans that Ghosts would fun at a steady 60fps. “It will be the best Call of Duty game we’ve ever made,” he promised, showing slides comparing the new game’s Xbox One visuals against previous games in the series.

May 21st

Microsoft unveiled the successor to the Xbox 360′s Kinect add-on, and revealed it’ll be paired with “every” Xbox One. It features a 1080P HD RGB camera which can be used with Skype, 30 FPS color, and an increased field-of-view. Among other voice commands, which let you instantly switch between playing a game, live TV, wathing movies, playing music, or browsing the web, Kinect’s mic lets you turn on the new system by saying “Xbox On.”

May 21st
So, we’ve just seen our first glimpse of the Xbox One, and after being turned on by voice control, we’ve had a look at the new dashboard, too. It’s not a massive departure from the current one, but there are, of course, differences. As you can see, the theme is a little bit plainer and cleaner than the Xbox 360 dash, but keeps the tile-like appearance also common to the Windows UI. You’ll recognize most of the tabs running along the top, but you’ll also see some new ones, including “Trending.” This tabs shows what’s popular among your friends, as well as what’s hot among the entire Xbox Live community.

May 21st

It may have taken two years and a new console generation, but Microsoft is finally making good on an old promise: Skype is coming to Xbox. Microsoft has been planning to port the internet telephony service to its home console since it purchased Skype back in 2011, but it never surfaced on the Xbox 360. Now, the service is poised to make the most of the next generation, leveraging the system’s camera and voice enhancements for a higher-quality experience than its predecessor was capable of. Gamers can receive calls even while watching movies, and they can open them up side-by-side other apps in Snap Mode. Naturally, Skype can be controlled via voice, with commands to shut off the mic or camera, end the call and go full screen. Group video chat is also available, but it’s still not clear just how many folks can be looped in.

Microsoft’s new Xbox has been officially unveiled at the company’s Redmond campus in a big, giant tent in the middle of the complex (so much for the console sharing its birth story with friends as a teenager).
For a sense of symmetry with our PlayStation 4 reveal post, the announcement of the new Xbox console comes seven years and six months (2,737 days) after the launch of the Xbox 360, marking one of the longest distances of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff between one console and its next regeneration.
The distance in time between this console and the last certainly makes up for the original Xbox’s lifespan, which was one of the shortest, at a mere four years and one day.
