Teased: New York Auto Show confirms 2014 Chevy Impala debut via Facebook [UPDATE]
Mar 21st
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Sedan, Chevrolet, GM
News of an impending automotive debut, especially one as big as the next Chevrolet Impala, generally come straight from the mouths of the automakers. Interesting, then, that the New York Auto Show’s Facebook page is the first bit of confirmation we’ve seen that the 2014 Impala will be making its worldwide debut in The Big Apple.
All we have to go along with that confirmation is the teaser image you see above (click on the pic to enlarge), so we can’t glean too many details just yet. We can see a Hofmeister-esque kink in the C-pillar, strongly accented in chrome trim, along with the well-known leaping impala emblem.
Past that, recent spy photos have revealed that the front-wheel-drive Impala will boast plenty of passenger room from its Epsilon-II architecture, the same guts that underpin the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac XTS. We’re also expecting GM’s well-regarded 3.6-liter V6 underhood, along with a possible turbocharged four and e-Assist hybrid setup.
This news comes on the heels of last week’s announcement by General Motors that it plans to replace the Impala in its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series effort with a new nameplate that will also see a production model offshoot, leading to renewed speculation that the automaker will not only sell a new full-size Impala, but potentially a large rear-wheel drive sedan to offer as well, possibly based on the company’s Zeta platform that underpins the Holden Commodore and recently introduced Chevrolet Caprice PPV law enforcement special.
The 2012 New York Auto Show is slated to kick off on April 4, but in the meantime, feel free to go over the teaser above with a fine-toothed comb, and stay tuned for any more details we find ahead of its debut.
UPDATE: GM has confirmed the Impala with the issuance of a press release and official image. In addition, it has confirmed that a revamped 2013 Traverse crossover will also bow in New York. The Traverse will be available with GM’s new front, center-mount airbag first revealed in the updated Buick Enclave, the Traverse’s twin. See the official release after the jump and note the addition of a Traverse interior image above.

‘Breaking Dawn’ rises to $283.5M worldwide debut (AP)

Official: 2012 Porsche 911 makes North American debut at Rennsport Reunion IV
Oct 14th
Porsche pulled form-fitting covers off two of its all-new 911 models today at Rennsport Reunion IV, marking the first official unveiling of the vehicle in North America. While we were at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September for the Type 991′s worldwide debut, it was an excellent opportunity to check out a few static examples up close and watch some of Porsche’s famed drivers take hot laps around the Laguna Seca race circuit in two similar models circling the track.
On display were two of the upgraded 911 S models, fitted with 3.8-liter flat-six engines that produce 400 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque (standard Carrera models have a 3.4-liter flat-six rated at 350 horsepower and 287 pound-feet of torque). A six-speed manual is standard in both rear-wheel drive models, with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK automated gearbox optional.
Bigger, better and lighter than its equivalent Type 997 predecessor, the new two-door promises impressive performance. According to Porsche, the 3,075-pound Carrera S will hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds with the PDK (with Sport Chrono option), while the 3,042-pound Carrera will need 4.2 seconds to hit the same benchmark. Our first opportunity to drive is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to tell you about it.
Check out the photo gallery of the 2012 Porsche 911 above, and look for more coverage from Rennsport Reunion IV over the next few days.

Fisker teases Surf shooting brake ahead of Frankfurt debut
Sep 7th
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Frankfurt Motor Show, Fisker
Fisker‘s shooting brake based on the plug-in Karma has a name: Surf. The luxury wagon will make its worldwide debut on September 13 at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Fisker says it will pull the wraps off the “stunning” Surf, a vehicle that will “wow global audiences” in less than six day’s time. The teaser released by Fisker today reveals next to nothing, but the automaker does say the Surf delivers “Pure Driving Passion” with extended-range capability much like its cousin, the Fisker Karma.
The only other bit of info Fisker is willing to release on the Surf is that it “delivers a bold new twist,” features “head-turning design” and will appeal to those with an active lifestyle. That’s it for now, says Fisker, but the rest of the details will be revealed soon enough (i.e., September 13). Look for us to post live pics and full details on the Surf when it debuts in Frankfurt.

Aug 19th

In the transition from prototype to production form, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will reportedly be subject to some minor modifications. It’s believed the production version of the plug-in hybrid, which will make its worldwide debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, will differ from the prototype in some minor – yet potentially critical – ways.
Sources say the production Prius Plug-in’s battery pack – a 5.2 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion unit – will be slightly smaller than the pack that powers the current prototypes. This, according to Green Car Reports, will increase the Prius’ ability to haul cargo. Additionally, GCR says “sources close to Toyota” have hinted the prototype Prius Plug-in’s 13-mile electric-only range will be improved upon before the gas-electric Toyota hits U.S. dealerships. How much an increase in range will we see? Well, that remains unknown, but a couple of miles would bump 13 up to 15, and that’d be right swell, don’t you think?

Aug 13th
It looks like the sly fox is ready to make its worldwide debut a few days early. In typical Mozilla fashion, a complete build of Firefox 6 is now unofficially available for your downloading pleasure, three days ahead of schedule. If you’re looking for a major facelift to the desktop edition, you won’t find one here — most of the new features aren’t cosmetic. Perhaps most visibly, you’ll find the domain name of the page you’re parked on highlighted in the address bar. On the Android side, version 6 makes much bigger promises, like a “fresh visual style in Chrome Gingerbread,” enhanced image scaling, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s “faster and uses less memory.” We’ve downloaded the desktop version of the browser ourselves, and we’ve found the release quite snappy. If you’re not afraid of a little pre-release downloading, you can catch the (desktop) fox at the source links below. And as per usual, please let us know how it’s treating you.

BMW M3 CRT showcases CFRP carbon fiber tech coming to i3 and i8
Jun 28th
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, MPG, BMW, Lightweight
Pictured above is the BMW M3 CRT. In this case, CRT is short for Carbon Racing Technologies, according to BMW. While the BMW M3 CRT is not what we’d typically call “green” – output from its monstrous 4.4-liter V8 engine is 450 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque – but it’s CRT tech showcases what we’ll soon see used on two of the German automaker’s alt-fuel vehicles: the electric i3 and the plug-in hybrid i8.
The M3 CRT represents the worldwide debut of an innovative production process for carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). This process, according to BMW, allows a cellular carbon honeycomb to be woven into CFRP mats of any size before being impregnated with synthetic resin and hardened. In the M3 CRT, only the hood and front bucket seats are made of CFRP. However, both the i3 and i8 will feature bodies made almost entirely from CFRP. BMW says that extensive use of CFRP will keep the i3′s weight in check, allowing the rear-wheel-drive electric to go 100 miles before needing a charge.
