Spy Shots: BMW 2 Series caught uncovered during shoot

Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, BMW, Luxury
Before we know it, the BMW 1 Series will be no more in the United States. Well, sort of. The current six-year-old coupe and convertible will be replaced by the fancy new 2 Series you see here, spotted completely uncovered during a photo shoot, with the 1 Series nomenclature being reserved for the hatchback and GT models that might not ever make it Stateside.
The roofline of the new 2 Series doesn’t appear to have to changed all that much from the current 1 Series coupe, but the front and rear fascias have indeed been smoothed out. (Truth time: As much as your author adores the 1 Series, he’s always found its rear end to be, well, weird.) It looks good, seen here in M235i guise, with large wheels, slimmer headlamps and large air intakes on either side of the front fascia.
The 2 Series is expected to come to the States, likely in M235i and 228i variants, though rumors suggest that we won’t get a non-M 235i model. The M235i is expected to be powered by the N55 turbocharged inline-six that we currently enjoy in the 335i sedan, producing something like 320 horsepower. The 228i, unsurprisingly, should use the 2.0-liter turbo-four from the 328i, making around 240 hp. Both engines will almost certainly employ eight-speed automatic transmissions and six-speed manuals.
Look for the new coupe to make its official debut in the coming months, with production scheduled to start in November.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has just one teensy-weensy request for its United States arm: Double your sales by 2017.
“China was not our biggest, I would say, disappointment. It was mainly the United States. We were expecting a strong year in the United States. It didn’t happen,” Ghosn said, speaking at a conference after announcing Nissan’s 2012 fiscal results, Automotive News reports. Because of this, Ghosn has ordered his US executives to iron out the problems that affected new vehicle launches and to strengthen the company’s dealer network.
In 2012, Nissan’s US sales rose to 1.1 million units – a five-percent increase, and a record, at that. But the company’s overall market share fell from 8.2 percent to 7.7 percent, putting the company further away from its goal of having a 10-percent stake overall.
Automotive News reports that the plan to increase sales includes increasing the number of dealerships in the US, doubling per-store sales and boosting its marketing efforts in key demographic groups. All we can say is: Good luck.

Chrysler recalls 469,000 SUVs worldwide over gearshift problem
May 11th
(Reuters) – Chrysler Group LLC is recalling about 469,000 SUVs worldwide to update software after some vehicles’ circuit boards were found to be transmitting signals that trigger inadvertent gear shifts to neutral, the No. 3 U.S. automaker said Saturday.
Included are 2006- to 2010-model-year Jeep Commanders and 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokees, of which about 295,000 are in the United States, 28,500 are in Canada and 4,200 are in Mexico. The remaining 141,000 are outside of North America.
Chrysler was aware of 26 accidents and 2 injuries related to the gearshift problem but no fatalities, a company spokesman said.
It was Chrysler’s largest recall since more than 900,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs were recalled worldwide in November to fix a part that could cause airbags to deploy inadvertently.
Chrysler, an affiliate of Italy’s Fiat SpA (FIA.MI), also said it is recalling 532 2013-model-year Ram 1500 pickup trucks in the United States and Canada, a third of which remain in dealer inventories, to inspect and possibly replace windshield defrosting and defogging components.
Additionally, the company said it is recalling about 5,330 right-hand-drive 2008 to 2012 Jeep Wranglers to install dust shields to prevent dust buildup that could compromise airbag operation. All of the vehicles, used mostly for rural mail delivery, are in the United States.
Chrysler said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to the Ram and Wrangler recall issues.
The company said it will directly contact affected customers and make the repairs for free.
Chrysler, which emerged from a government-sponsored bankruptcy four years ago, last month reported a steep drop in quarterly profits due to an aggressive new-vehicle launch schedule, but said it was on track to meet its business targets, expecting a strong second half of 2013.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and its Italian parent Fiat, which currently owns a 58.5 percent share of the U.S. automaker, said there was a 50-50 chance that Fiat’s buyout of Chrysler would be finalized by June 2014.

May 10th
Following a Capitol Hill appearance that temporarily stopped work for dozens of female staffers, HRH Prince Harry of Wales kicked off the second day of his tour of the United States on a somber note.
On Friday morning, the 28-year-old royal arrived at Arlington National Cemetery in his British Army ceremonial uniform of the Blues and Royals. Harry laid a wreath with a personal note at Section 60. The handwritten note read, “To my comrades-in-arms of the United States of America, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom. Captain Harry Wales.”
The prince also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a small bouquet of flowers at the John F. Kennedy memorial.
Harry then changed into his British Army camouflage and headed over to the Military Advanced Training Center of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. to meet wounded U.S. soldiers.
The third-in-line to the British throne is due in Colorado on Friday night, where he’ll attend a reception hosted by the British Consul-General to Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming Beverly Simpson. On Saturday, Harry will spend all day at the 2013 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs. Be sure to follow @RoyalReview for live tweets and updates.

May 9th
By Doug Palmer WASHINGTON (Reuters) – European Union officials on Thursday touted the huge economic potential of a proposed free trade pact with the United States even as they poked fun at its cumbersome name, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. “We’ve launched this strange animal called TTIP (‘tee tip’),” EU Ambassador to the United States João Vale de Almeida said at a reception to mark Europe Day. “This is a game-changer. As I like to say, this is the mother of all free trade areas. …

Apr 28th
By Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) – Asian shares crept ahead on Monday, while the dollar lost ground to the yen as markets hunkered down for a busy week for economic data and central bank policy meetings in the euro zone and United States. Activity was sparse with Japanese markets closed for a holiday and China off until Thursday. The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.2 percent, but off a six-week high touched on Friday. South Korean shares were flat, while Australia's market added 0.5 percent thanks to ongoing strength in banking stocks. …
