Visualized: Seattle Mariners unveil ‘largest screen in Major League Baseball’
Apr 3rd
This week, the Seattle Mariners showed off a new 3,840 x 1,080, surface-mount LED display at Safeco Field — one the team’s PR department touts as the “largest in Major League Baseball and among the largest in all of sports.” At 201.5 feet wide by 56.7 feet tall, its surface area of 11,425 square feet places it behind massive screens at Charlotte Motor Speedway (16,000 square feet) and Cowboys Stadium (11,520 square feet). That’s good enough, the team said, to rank as the third-largest sports-venue display in North America and surpasses Kauffman Stadium’s HD scoreboard as the largest in baseball. Roughly 1,200 individual panels make up the screen, offering a total of 4,147,200 pixels — more pixels than the 2.6-megapixel Cowboys Stadium display, the team pointed out.
To feed their new HD beast, the team revamped its video control room and upgraded to high-def cameras throughout the stadium. A 64-bit operating system called VisionSOFT allows the team to mix in multiple video sources, from in-house animations and HD video feeds to out-of-town footage from broadcast partners. All told, the HD upgrade required about 3,000 each feet of power, video coax and Cat5 cables. Along with showing ads, stats and replays, the team will take advantage of the HD resolution to display social media updates from fans during games via Twitter, Google+ and other sources.
You can check out more shots of the new screen in action after the break.

Alicia Keys is moving out of the Big Apple.
After her purchase of Hollywood star Eddie Murphy‘s $12 million New Jersey mansion, this “Girl on Fire” singer has successfully sold her New York City glass penthouse, located in the swanky SoHo neighborhood.
Listed at $17.95 million, the 6,167 square feet boasts five bedrooms, four bedrooms and — being that the pad is almost entirely covered in floor-to-cieling windows — it has gorgeous views of the Manhattan cityscape, too.
According to the listing, the home also features four powder rooms, a living room equipped with a fireplace, a state-of-the-art gourmet eat-in kitchen with a walk-in butler’s pantry and a separate formal dining room encased in a glass solarium.
The abode also has access to another 3,000 square feet of open terraces.
Aside from Keys, her husband Swizz Beatz and their son Egypt, the rooftop also housed many previous A-list residents including Nicole Kidman and Denzel Washington.
Two years ago, the “Fallin’” crooner bought the pad from musician Lenny Kravitz for $12.5 million.

Feb 20th
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West plunked down a whopping $11 million for their new Bel Air mansion – and we know why.
According to public records filed with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, the power couple is already planning to renovate the 9,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style abode to add a gym, movie theater, hair and makeup salon, bowling alley, basketball court — plus an indoor pool.
Not that it’s too shabby as is…
Those public records reveal the home’s first floor — which is 4,500 square feet in size alone — boasts an oak-paneled library with a marble fireplace, dining room, maid’s bedroom and butler’s pantry.
The living room is flanked by stone columns, while a “Great Room” has beamed ceilings, a stone fireplace and a bar and wine cellar.
There’s also a massive kitchen (with breakfast room), a den, plus a playroom that could easily be converted into a nursery for their upcoming arrival — plus an adjacent maid/nanny bedroom.
The 4,000-square-foot second floor consists of two master bedrooms with large walk-in closets; each has a bathroom with spas. There is also an exercise room plus two huge guest bedrooms with their own bathrooms and — wait for it — a private elevator.
Outside, Kim and Kanye can enjoy a large infinity-edged pool, which comes with mountain views.
Beside is it an outdoor loggia which serves as an outdoor eating area. And the power couple’s fleet of luxury rides can be kept in the three-car garage, which has an adjacent motor court.
The digs are certainly safe: the home, situated in a secluded gated community, boasts a state-of-the-art security system.
The power couple snapped up the home, which sits on four aces of land, just a week after announcing they were expecting their first baby.
Situated 12 miles from downtown Los Angeles, Bel Air is one of the most exclusive enclavesin California and is steeped in Hollywood tradition, with both younger and older stars residing there.
Kim and Kanye’s celebrity neighbors will include Jennifer Aniston, basketball star Chris Paul and Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis.
The happy couple are expecting their baby this summer.

Mortgage lender Quicken bets on downtown Detroit’s revival
Feb 18th
DETROIT (Reuters) – Dan Gilbert has a vision for downtown Detroit that many would find hard to square with the long, painful decline commonly associated with this city: a vibrant urban core full of creative, innovative and talented young people. Yet Quicken Loans, the mortgage lender Gilbert co-founded in 1985, has invested $1 billion over three years, bought some 2.6 million square feet of commercial space in the downtown area and moved 7,000 employees there in a bid to make that vision a reality. …
Louisiana’s Assumption Parish Sinkhole Gets Bigger
Feb 15th
The sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish, La., continues to grow.
John Boudreaux, director of the Assumption Parish Office of Homeland Security, tells The Advocate roughly 5,000 square feet of land sloughed off into the sinkhole on the morning of Feb. 12, and that by the afternoon, the land-loss had grown to an estimated 7,500 square feet.
Boudreaux said he hadn’t measured the sinkhole, but it possibly could cover as many as 9 acres after the 75-foot-by-100-foot parcel of land crumbled and fell into the slurry hole on Tuesday.
The sinkhole was discovered south of La. 70 on Aug. 3, causing more than 150 residences in the area to be evacuated.
Scientists have said the sinkhole formed following the failure of an underground cavern in the Napoleonville Dome owned by Texas Brine Co. LLC.

Feb 15th
With a new album on the way, Brad Paisley is moving on up.
The country crooner and his wife, Nashville actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, have listed their Pacific Palisades near Los Angeles for a whopping $2.995 million.
According to the listing, the vintage 3,394 square feet home features four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a stunning two-story living room furnished with a fireplace, beamed ceilings and stained glass windows.
What else is in their California digs?
The 40-year-old musician has also decked out his large gourmet kitchen — completed with breakfast area — with stainless steel appliances. The cooking area also leads to a formal dining room.
Upstairs, the master bedroom suite includes a separate tub and shower, fireplace and an outdoor deck with views of the ocean and the property’s lush backyard filled with citrus trees.
Since Williams-Paisley films her ABC series in — you guessed it — Nashville, Tenn., it’s no surprise that the “Letter to Me” singer is returning back to his country roots to be closer to his ladylove.
The couple are also proud parents to sons William Huckleberry, 5, and Jasper Warren, 3 — so moving to a bigger home may have been already on their minds.
Launch the gallery above to take a tour of their cozy abode.
