‘X Factor’s’ Emblem3 Backing Tate Stevens for the Win: ‘He Really Deserves This’
Dec 14th
In a surprise elimination on Thursday, the surf boys of FOX’s The X Factor were edged out of the Final 3. But, they don’t seem to be all that bothered by the loss.
“I honestly only feel happy right now,” Drew Chadwick told reporters after the show. “We get to go and make some badass music now and not have to be under any restrictions.”
“It was like the music industry on Miracle-Gro or steroids, it was awesome,” Wesley Stromberg said. “We learned a lot. Now, it’s over and we’re about to go do it for real now.”
It doesn’t hurt matters that their mentor was Simon Cowell, who’s not only an executive producer on the show but half owner of entertainment company, Syco (the other 50 percent is owned by Sony Music).
“Simon made it very clear to us that he’s definitely interested,” Chadwick revealed. “And he actually said, ‘You guys are going to have huge careers.’”
Cowell may have to share the guys with L.A. Reid, who the Huntington Beach residents said also expressed interest in signing them.
The Epic Records executive, and only judge holdover from Season 1, announced he wouldn’t be returning for Season 3 on Thursday. And Chadwick says he understands why he’d make the decision.
“I think that L.A. Reid is more of a creative, behind the scenes production type of dude,” the 20-year-old, who spent some time pondering if the group was misrepresenting themselves on the show, said.
“Reality TV is more about the TV show than the music,” he continued. “Me and him have a lot in common in that sense.”
Now that they’re out of the game, Carly Rose Sonenclar, Fifth Harmony and Tate Stevens are vying for the $5 million dollar prize next week. So, who do the guys say they’re throwing their support behind?
“I’m just going to get real with you guys,” Chadwick started. “Carly is 13 years old, she’s an amazing singer, she’s going to be doing great things with the talent she’s been given. Tate is a little bit older. He’s amazing, he’s been playing music for a long time, he’s a family man, he has a great heart, he has pure intentions, he’s a good guy. I feel like he really deserves this. He needs a break. I love Tate. I love Carly and I love Fifth harmony too, but I think he’s the most deserving.”
The X Factor airs Wednesday and Thursday at 8PM on FOX.

One Direction Settle Name Dispute: British Boy Band Gets to Keep Its Name
Sep 4th
The countdown to the release of One Direction’s sophomore album Take Me Home has just begun, but now the boys have something else to celebrate. They have officially won the right to keep their name.
Back in April, another One Direction — an American group fronted by Sean O’Leary – filed a suit against the British boy band, Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Entertainment, and Sony Music for $1 million. The band claimed that the British One Direction caused consumer confusion and harmed the U.S. group’s reputation.
Now, the two One Directions have reached an agreement.
What does this mean for the American One Direction?
The California-based band will change its name to Uncharted Shores, and according to The Daily Mail, both parties are pleased with the resolution.
The alleged confusion even caused an increase in iTunes sales – and YouTube views – for the little-known American band and their single “2012.”
Meanwhile, the British One Direction are gearing up for the release of Take Me Home, the anticipated follow-up to 2011′s smash hit Up All Night. They will release their new single, “Live While We’re Young,” on Oct. 1. Columbia records describes the track as an “energy packed song, mixing rock undertones with smooth harmonies, about living for the moment.”
As for the video, the boys were snapped on the set of their wet and wild music video making a splash. The bizarre party setup included a pool, trampoline, tepee, hay barrels, an inflatable microphone, and a giant inflatable banana.
The boys — Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan – also have a comic book in the works. Fame: One Direction will profile the journey of the bandmates thus far, starting with when Cowell first put them together on X Factor.
Take Me Home is slated to be released on Nov. 13, 2012. The new record is currently available for pre-order.

What crisis? Sony Music buys EMI’s back catalogue for $2.2 billion
Apr 19th
While its parent company goes through a dramatic reinvention, Sony Music’s scraped together $2.2 billion to lead a consortium that’s just bought EMI’s music publishing business. While it’ll sell off the three Virgin and Famous Music labels to avoid competition concerns, the company will gain access to three million songs from artists like Frank Sinatra, Jay-Z and Adele. It won’t affect the day-to-day running of EMI’s record label, which is a separate entity, but it will make Sony the biggest music publisher in the world. It’s hard not to envisage a future in which the company’s influence in the way we buy and listen to music becomes even greater — especially given that EMI led the charge in abandoning DRM all those years ago.

Feb 12th
omg! – LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Sony Music executives will meet this week in New York to determine a strategy for marketing the nine albums, soundtracks and compilations that feature Whitney Houston, the pop singer who died on Saturday at age 48, according to two people familiar with the plans. Executives will also discuss stepping up marketing efforts for the upcoming film “Sparkle,” a low-budget movie starring Houston that will be released in August, and for the accompanying soundtrack on which she sings two songs, added one of the people with knowledge of the conversations. …

Nov 18th

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill currently in the US Congress, with the stated goal of curtailing copyright infringement, but with the actual effects of setting up a government firewall to block out unwanted sites, and giving the US jurisdiction over foreign sites that have anything to do with infringement of US copyright.
It is repellent.
A Reddit user discovered a document [PDF] hosted by the Global Intellectual IP Center (“Global”), from before the introduction of SOPA, urging Congress to enact such a measure. Among those corporate sponsors is Nintendo, who is demonstrably and justifiably upset about piracy, and committed to taking all the wrong steps to stop it.
Other companies signing off in favor of this anti-”rogue site” legislation, in the interest of protecting their IP online include Sony — Sony Electronics, Sony Music, and Sony Pictures, separately. EA is also listed, along with Rite Aid (what?) and Zippo (what?)
Okay, so you already know how we feel about this thing. If you feel the same way, you can write or call Congress. November 16 saw concerted “Stop Censorship” efforts (Tumblr black-barred everyone’s dashboard in protest, for example), but you can, of course, still contact your representatives. If you’re outside of the US, uh, cross your fingers and hope you don’t lose all the US-based visitors to your sites.

Been dutifully uploading music to Mountain View’s cloud since Google I/O? Might want hit pause for just a sec, while you tune to Google’s beat here in Los Angeles, as it’s just gone and launched its own music store integrated with Android Market. Best part is, the service still free, though you can now purchase millions of songs from the store to expand your collection of tunes. 90-second track previews are available, and all songs are high quality 320kbps MP3s. And for those with an aversion to waiting, which should be all of you, uploads can now be nixed entirely, provided tracks in your possession jive with Google’s master copies. The company is now on equal footing with Cupertino and Amazon’s music offerings, who both offer direct sales coupled with a cloud component that allows for unlimited redownloads. Yet it more closely resembles the latter, as unlike the former there isn’t a $25 yearly free as all tracks can be streamed for free.
Naturally, a new version of the Google Music app is already available in the Android Market, and a fresh look for Music Manager will follow in the next few hours. Unsurprisingly, Google Music sans beta brings tight integration with Google +. You can now share songs on your friend stream, and not just samples, either — your buddies can listen to full tracks or albums one time through without ever leaving your profile.
