SK Telecom’s Atti learning robot hands-on (video)
Feb 26th
SK Telecom was at Mobile World Conference last year with some early concepts of a learning robot — aka, angry Beaker with a top hat — which seems to have led to this year’s final product: Atti. Atti is Korean for buddy or friend and judging by how he (or she?) and Brad got along we’d suggest robo is aptly named. Using a phone snapped into the top of the head, the robot reacts to your interaction with it via camera and a wand attachment that sits in Atti’s hand while not in use. Educational games are another focus here using Qualcomm’s Vuforia tech allowing youngsters to point the handset at printed words and get tips on pronunciation, multimedia examples and the like.
Atti was developed with the help of the Utah State University to help develop the edutainment content and expects to see this hit retail in overseas markets sometime in the first half of the year. Unfortunately we didn’t have any preschoolers on hand so we used our own Brad Molen to put Atti through its paces. The end result? Brad nails a high score and gets a star. Video and gallery are just below the fold.

Feb 17th
LG finally showed off the XL 5.5-inch version of its upcoming Optimus G Pro at the end of a Facebook promo last week, and now it’s revealed a launch date in Korea, more specs and a window for its arrival in North America. Also of note? Its CPU is the just-announced quad-core Snapdragon 600 that’s supposed to be a milder upgrade (compared to the potentially 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800) to its predecessor, the powerful S4 Pro. New software tweaks include a dual record that uses both cameras simultaneously and VR Panorama that appears to be similar to Google’s Photo Sphere stitching.
Besides the extra screen space and updated internals, the larger version also sports a slightly larger battery than the Japanese version announced previously by NTT Docomo, with 3,140mAh compared to 3,000, but keeps the 2GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera, microSDXC slot and LTE. The phone will be released on local carriers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus on Wednesday for 968,000 won ($897), while a North American launch is mentioned for Q2 along with the Japanese release. We’ll find out more about this phone — and likely a few others — at MWC 2013 later this week, for now check out the press release after the break for more specs.

Dec 27th
South Korea is an ocean apart from North America in more ways than one. Where US and Canadian carriers virtually center their businesses around heavily subsidized phones, the Korea Communications Commission is discouraging the idea. The agency isn’t just fining KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom for offering device discounts beyond 270,000 won ($252), it’s banning those networks from taking new subscribers for as many as 24 days in January — they’ll have no choice but to serve their existing bases for most of the month. The providers are unsurprisingly miffed, although the punishment may be a win for customers who won’t necessarily be as indebted to their carriers when they spring for a Galaxy Note II or Optimus G.

Apr 23rd
Just under two months after LG’s Optimus Vu got priced for the hometown market, in flies news that another hue will soon be on those very same shelves. The 5-inch, 4:3 ratio’d Android smartphone will soon hit South Korea in white, purportedly targeting the “younger” market — you know, folks who like “cool” things (LG’s translated words, not ours). Folks can look for the device — which should remain unchanged outside of the external color — to hit SK Telecom as early as next week, but there’s no word on when (or if) it’ll spread to other markets.

Samsung, LG and Pantech, among others, fined $40 million in Korean price fixing scam
Mar 15th
The truth in advertising is that there is none — it’s mostly all smoke and mirrors. But sometimes those illusory promises have real-world criminal intent behind them, like this latest ruling from the Korean government’s corporate regulator. In a decision handed down earlier today, that governing body found mobile phone makers LG, Samsung and Pantech, in addition to operators KT, SK Telecom and LG Upius guilty of price fixing. In what’s been framed as a case of consumer fraud, the OEMs reportedly inflated the associated costs of handsets, which were then marketed with supposed discounts by the colluding carriers. Collectively the group’s been ordered to pony up about 45.3 billion won (or $40.2 million) in fines, with the largest of those penalties belonging to Samsung at 14.2 billion won (about $12.6 million) and SK Telecom at 20.2 billion won (about $18 million). Adding further insult to this public injury is the FTC, which has taken the extra step of imposing sales restrictions that are intended to prevent the involved parties from committing future infractions. Check out the source below for the full scoop on this corporate back-scratching.

SK Telecom Smart Learning robots add twist to interactive learning, we go hands-on (video)
Mar 7th
They aren’t quite up to Johnny Number Five’s level of fame and stature, but SK Telecom’s new “Smart Learning” robots have something it (he?) never could have dreamed of: the power of a smartphone. The mechanical critters are designed to be next-gen educational tools for our posterity, and only function thanks to a Bluetooth-connected Android handset which serves as both the brains of the operation and the interactive display. We saw the robots in action last week at Mobile World Congress in a few different scenarios: a board game, a reading comprehension tool and other clever learning activities. This is just scraping the surface, because an SDK is in the works that will allow developers to find plenty of ways to take advantage of the tech. The robots are still prototypes for now, but we should expect to see them arrive in Korea within the next six months. Check out a video of the little guys in action after the break. Update: we’re uploading the vid again after discovering a small error. It should be up shortly.

Samsung Galaxy S III on SK Telecom mixes 2GB of RAM and quad-core, importers break out credit cards
Jun 8th

There’s a Galaxy S III with a quad-core chip, and there’s a Galaxy S III with 2GB of RAM. Never the twain shall meet? They reportedly will at SK Telecom: a comparison sheet leaked to Phone Arena has the South Korean carrier’s SHV-E210S variant combining the 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad with the 2GB of RAM that the dual-core versions receive as a consolation prize. It’s even supposed to keep LTE, which could suggest that Samsung isn’t wedded to Qualcomm for 4G in South Korea like it is for North America. The phone’s 4G support loses steam outside of its native country, and it gains an ever so slight amount of bulk, but we’re looking at what could be the best of both worlds for Samsung’s flagship. We have a hunch that a few foreigners might be eager for an import, or a surprise vacation to Seoul, when the E210S arrives in July.
