What’s the point of the UK’s new 4,000-strong (by the end of 2012) charging station network? According to Polar sales director Neil Sharpe, who posted to the UK LeafTalk forums, the devices aren’t there to make long-distance EV drives possible. Instead:
The POLAR network is designed to provide available ‘top-up’ charging in local areas where you will park for a period of time which means privately owned car parks such as Supermarkets and Rail stations.
This response wasn’t received too kindly by many LeafTalk members, who are asking for high-speed DC fast chargers for their Leafs at highway service stations. In-city low-speed chargers aren’t that important, the Leaf drivers say, since overnight charging provided plenty of juice for daily use. The discussion that follows is worth reading, to see how people who actually drive electric cars and people who pay attention to investors and business and government representatives agree and disagree on what sort of infrastructure is needed. Read through it here.

We’d bet Azure Dynamics is thrilled to announce that it just logged its largest Transit Connect Electric order to date. At 100-units strong, Norwegian Ford dealership, RøhneSelmer, can lay claim to the single, most sizable Connect Electric order ever.
RøhneSelmer’s 100-unit order adds to the 58 Transit Connect Electric the dealership ordered in March of this year. Anders Gadsboll, sales director of RøhneSelmer, says this of the electric van:
We sold 50 Transit Connect Electric vans before the first unit was delivered to us and we’re confident we’ll sell many, many more the remainder of this year and beyond. It’s the right product for today’s Norwegian market.
Azure Dynamics, along with Ford Motor Company, kicked off production of the European version of the Transit Connect Electric in June of this year. Azure attributes much of the Connect Electric’s success in Norway to the nation’s “aggressive environmental goals.”

In an effort to attract more car buyers to Chevrolet, Buick and GMC dealerships, General Motors will now offer two-year, 30,00-mile standard vehicle maintenance package as part of its Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program. The no-cost maintenance program includes free oil changes whenever the Oil Life Monitor system says one is needed, tire rotations and multi-point inspections.
The announcement, which is now in effect, comes in addition to a one-year, 12,000-mile overall warranty, a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 172-point inspection. GM will also continue to offer a free trial of OnStar and XM Satellite Radio.
GM sales director Jennifer Costabile says that the move will give customers more for their money, adding that the program “offers our customers an outstanding experience from the moment they drive their Chevrolet, Buick or GMC Certified Pre-Owned vehicle off of the lot.” The General hopes that the program will increase the value of the Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program, while also lowering the total cost of vehicle ownership.
