Rumormill: Mercedes says no to hi-po diesels, may greenlight 911-fighter

Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Europe, Mercedes-Benz, Rumormill, Diesel, Luxury
Mercedes-Benz has no interest in pursuing BMW down the diesel performance rabbit hole, according to Autocar. The publication spoke with Ola Kallenius, chairman of the board of management at Mercedes-Benz AMG, who said the company explored the idea of performance diesels in the past and found the concept too fraught with compromises to be worthwhile. Kallenius said gasoline engines have obvious advantages when it comes to weight, sound, agility and response. The AMG guru also pointed to the fact that the company’s modern performance engines have borrowed considerable diesel technology, including direct injection and turbocharging, to reach their current power and efficiency levels.
In a separate report, Kallenius was quoted as saying it would be wise to grow the AMG brand after the success of the SLS AMG coupe and roadster. Rumors have indicated a machine capable of giving the Porsche 911 a run for its money around the world’s race tracks may be in the cards, but Kallenius said no final decision has been made about growing the performance arm’s ranks just yet. Still, the boss didn’t outright nix the idea, so there’s some glimmer of possibility there, however thin.

Los Angeles: 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG offers all-weather, all-family rapid transit
Nov 17th
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Performance, SUV, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury
We posted the official pictures from Mercedes-Benz earlier this week, but it wasn’t until today that the 2012 ML63 AMG was revealed in the flesh.
Muscle arrives in the form of the now-familar twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8, which replaces the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. No need to complain, as the boosted engine produces 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque (opt for the AMG Performance Package and buyers will receive 550 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque). With a standard Mercedes-Benz AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed transmission, the all-wheel-drive SUV will hit 60 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds. While the standard ML63 AMG is electronically-limited to 155 mph, the Performance Package raises it to 174 mph (and reduces the 0-60 sprint to just 4.6 seconds).
In person, the ML63 AMG looks really good. The AMG treatment, limited to aggressively reworked fascias, some matte silver trim and wider fenders to accompany the 20-inch AMG wheels, looks clean and understated. Now… where are the keys?

The future of AMG includes electrification, begins with all-electric SLS E-Cell
Nov 15th
With alternative powertrains staking a larger claim in the mainstream, it’s simply a matter of time before automakers begin adapting the technology for performance applications. The in-house tuning division of Mercedes-Benz won’t be left behind, and we’ll see the first all-electric AMG product by the end of next year.
Mercedes will begin taking orders for the SLS AMG E-Cell towards the middle of 2012, with test drives and deliveries slated to begin late next year and in early 2013. Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz AMG, says development of the all-wheel-drive, all-electric supercar is moving along at a brisk pace, although official specs, range and curb weight haven’t been firmed up just yet. However, Källenius is confident that despite the additional weight of the lithium-ion battery packs occupying the torque tube tunnel, performance will be exceptional, particularly with AMG’s ability to independently control torque output to each wheel via the four electric motors.
But the SLS AMG E-Cell is only the first step – even though it’s a massive leap forward for the brand. Electric drivetrains and some implementation of a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) will be part of AMG products in the future, although Källenius wouldn’t commit to saying which models would benefit from the technology. “We must look at everything,” Källenius told us, and utilizing alternative powertrains in the pursuit of ultimate performance will be key to AMG’s tire-shredding efforts in the future.

Review: 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302
Nov 14th

The Pony Car’s Best Ambassador
Despite extolling their many carnal virtues for years, we know that there’s still a sizable group of enthusiasts who have never managed to wrap their heads around the idea of owning a pony car. We’ve heard all the excuses before, from complaints about refinement, Jurassic underpinnings and muscle-straining inputs to shopworn stereotypes about the people who drive them. Thing is, if we’re being honest, many of these same notions have troubled us as well – even those of us who have triumphed over our prejudices and actually bought one of the things.
Well, boys and girls, Ford finally has a four-wheeled answer for the naysayers and skeptics: The Mustang Boss 302. Just as bacon is the gateway meat for wayward vegetarians, the orange crush seen here is the four-wheeled, applewood-smoked come-on for pony car doubters. Better still, unlike that tasty bit of swine dining, it’s nearly guilt-free.
The 2012 Boss 302 may carry the namesake of Ford’s legendary 1969 competition car, and it might work a treat on racetracks, but Ford has made sure it’s an honest-to-Detroit everyday proposition, not just a weekend warrior for waxing overconfident BMW M and Mercedes-Benz AMG preeners.

Video: The Silver Arrows are Mercedes-Benz World’s private army of Stigs
Jul 14th
Filed under: Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, UK
We all have trouble getting out of bed in the morning once in a while. Some more often than others. But when you’ve got a lot full of Mercedes-Benz AMG muscle sedans to play with, you jump up with a little more spring in your step.
That is, assuming you actually need sleep at all, because some say these drivers from Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands in Surrey, England, aren’t quite human. At least, not if they are who they look like. Mercedes calls them their Silver Arrows, and if you thought one Stig was good, just follow the jump to check out what kind of antics a whole team can get themselves into. Let’s just say it involves plenty of tire spinning and opposite lock.

Report: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series specs and launch mooted
Jul 4th
Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series won’t be officially unveiled until July, but Canadian forum Beyond has managed to get the inside scoop early.
Canadian AMG dealers let the cat out of the bag by asking customers who have reserved one of these rockets if they’d like to enter a contest to go to the N
ürburgring. With a little sleuthing, Beyond was able to uncover the plan and connect the dots from there.
The car will reportedly be let loose at the Nürburgring during the German GP, packing a 6.2-liter, 500-plus-horsepower V8. The engine comes loaded with internals taken straight from the SLS AMG supercar, and is backed by a seven-speed gearbox and locking differential. Sounds tasty, and if our time in the latest C63 AMG Coupe is anything to go on, we’re sure that the Black Series will be nothing short of spectacular.

First Drive: 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec

Korean Luxury Gets A Little Sharper
Hyundai isn’t interested in knocking shields with the likes of the BMW M guard, the Audi S line or even the Mercedes-Benz AMG legion with its 2012 Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. Instead, the newest addition to the Genesis line is out to offer buyers an extra helping of power and slightly sharper dynamics without all the motorsports pretense of its haughty German rivals. With 23 straight months of sales increases and 29,122 units sold last year, there doesn’t seem to be much of an argument for varying the luxury sedan’s recipe.
Even so, Hyundai has been quick to update its mid-luxury creation. Despite having arrived in 2008 as a 2009 model, the Genesis received a mild refresh in 2010, and 2012 brings a range of improvements across the line. Those include more power and fuel efficiency for the entry-level 3.8-liter V6 engine, aesthetic tweaks and the arrival of this range-topping Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. We were able to spend some time behind the wheel of the new five-liter four-door just outside of Las Vegas, but is the new bruiser worth its $47,350 price tag?

2012 Volvo S60 and XC60 R-Design get slight boosts in power
Apr 20th
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Crossover, Volvo
While the R-Design packages for the Volvo S60 and XC60 add a measure of visual flair to the Swedish family-haulers – as well as some suspension tweaks – the one thing they’re lacking is a commensurate boost in power. The Volvo R-Design models are closer to an AMG, M-Sport or S-Line appearance package than an actual Mercedes-Benz AMG, BMW M or Audi S or RS performance model. But Volvo is out to fix that with a pair of revised offerings for 2012.
Bearing the same R-Design nomenclature, the sporty versions of the S60 sedan and XC60 crossover will now benefit from an extra 25 horsepower and 29 lb-ft of torque coming out of their turbocharged six-cylinder T6 engine, bringing it up from 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque to 325 hp and 354 lb-ft respectively.
The rest of the parameters carry over from the existing R-Design models, but the increased output ought to make Volvo’s warmed-over range that much more enticing. Unfortunately, the upgraded engine does not appear, however, to be available on the V60 R-Design sport wagon that bridges the gap between the S60 and XC60 models.
Follow the jump for more details in Volvo’s official press release, and click the thumbnails below to scope out the fresh batch of images released with the announcement.

Mercedes-Benz to launch teen driving school
Mar 25th

“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz“. Janice Joplin’s words may seem entertaining to some, but strikingly familiar to anyone who’s gone through the ordeal of ushering their teenager into the world of driving. While most parents wouldn’t consider buying their teen a Mercedes as a first car – at least, not a new one – the automaker is offering the next best thing. And in many ways, it’s even better.
Armed with statistics of teenage driving accidents and the success of a similar program in the UK, Mercedes-Benz USA is preparing to launch its own teen driving school right here in the United States. The program is aimed at turning new drivers into safer drivers through an advanced curriculum that goes over and above what’s mandated by the state in order to fulfill the basic requirements for a driver’s license. Going even further, the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is negotiating with local DMVs across the country over integrating its program with the existing mandatory process to create an all-encompassing program.
If it achieves the same goals as it has in the UK, opening an advanced driving school for teens in America strikes us as one of the best safety features Mercedes-Benz has come up with yet. For the company that pioneered ABS brakes, crumple zones, stability control, brake assist and traction control, that’s no mean feat. Details in the press release after the jump.
