Shanghai: BMW X4 hatches its fastback shape in Shanghai
Apr 19th
Filed under: Concept Cars, Crossover, BMW, Shanghai Motor Show, Design/Style, Luxury
The day has finally come for BMW to pull the covers off its X4 Concept at the Shanghai Motor Show. The machine brings few surprises – we’ve already seen an official image gallery from the German automaker, so its exterior shape was well known – but at least now we get to see it with our own eyes, and with the lenses of our very own cameras.
You can clearly see the fastback roofline in our high-res image gallery above, along with the jacked-up stance that allows BMW to call this machine a Sports Activity Vehicle, which basically means “Crossover” to our friends in Munich. We’ve seen similar vehicle shapes before, most notably in the form of the BMW X6, but also as far back as the 1980s from the likes of AMC.
We fully expect the transition from concept to production to be pretty seamless, so what we see here is, for the most part, what we’ll see on the showroom floor in 2014. Feel free to peruse the press release below, but first, be sure to browse through our live images from Shanghai and let us know what you think.

Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G1 X samples gallery
Jan 16th
Just Posted: We’ve spent a couple of days shooting with a pre-production Canon PowerShot G1 X. We’ve prepared a 30 image gallery, shot in a range of lighting conditions and using a variety of focal lengths, ISO settings and apertures, in addition to the studio examples we’ve already posted. The G1 X may look like an existing G-series compact but fits a near DSLR-sized sensor into its slightly brick-like body. so what does this mean for image quality and does its f/5.8 maximum aperture at the long end of the zoom rob it of its low-light potential? Click here to judge for yourselves.

Filed under: LA Auto Show, SUV, Jeep
Jeep may not have anything big to show us here in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t mean the automaker has arrived empty-handed. New for 2012, Jeep has released special Arctic Editions of both the Wrangler and Liberty SUVs, and the icy duo make their debut here at the LA Auto Show.
On both models, the Arctic package adds semi-gloss wheels – the Wrangler receiving 17-inch rollers while the Liberty makes due with 16s – as well as special paint, Arctic badging and a decidedly tacky Yeti footprint decal. Inside, there are some minor aesthetic tweaks, including white accent fabrics, orange piping on the seats and, of course, more badging. Check out both of the special Jeeps in our attached high-res image gallery.

Followup: Jaguar completes coast-to-coast U.S. road trip in diesel XF
Nov 17th
Filed under: Sedan, Europe, Jaguar, Diesel, Luxury
It’s not every day that you see a diesel Jaguar XF on these shores. In fact, at least officially, there’s only one. And it just completed a cross-country road trip that took it from New York to Los Angeles.
The trip kicked off last week in the Big Apple and just wrapped up earlier this week in LA. Over the course of the eight-day journey across eleven states, three time zones and 2,884 miles, the bone-stock XF with the 2.2-liter diesel four averaged a highly impressive 62.9 miles per gallon (even better than the previous European tour), hitting a peak of 67 mpg as it approached the West Coast.
Not too shabby, especially for a luxury sedan that is, at the end of the day, anything but a lightweight. Check out the updated image gallery to see how the oil-burning Jag progressed, and follow the jump for the official press release.

Spy Shots: Production 2012 Honda CR-V caught ahead of LA Auto Show debut
Nov 10th
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Spy Photos, Crossover, Honda
We’ll be honest: Not only have we already seen the production 2012 Honda CR-V in the flesh, we’ve driven it. And we aren’t the only ones. In fact, these spy shots were taken during a local CR-V media drive that’s taking place in Detroit, and while we can’t talk about our impressions of Honda’s all-new crossover just yet, we can tell you that the vehicle in these pictures is the final production model.
Honda will officially take the wraps off its 2012 CR-V at the LA Auto Show next week, with the first examples hitting showrooms before the end of the year. It’s common knowledge that the new CR-V will continue to use Honda’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, though mated to a new (or, at least, revised) transmission that will enhance both performance and fuel economy. The CR-V’s interior gets a healthy update, too, with some new materials used throughout the cabin. The overall form and function of the interior, however, won’t differ much from the current model.
You’ll be able to read our full impressions of the 2012 Honda CR-V next week. Until then, click through our attached image gallery to see the production crossover out on the street.

Official: Volvo rolling in to LA with C70 Inscription edition
Nov 8th
Filed under: LA Auto Show, Convertible, Volvo, Luxury
Never quite capable of keeping its sales in pace with its German rivals, the Volvo C70 doesn’t appear long for this world. The joint venture with Pininfarina that produced the C70 is shutting down and we’ve yet to receive any word on a potential new production site. So what we could be looking at here is the hardtop convertible’s swan song.
Called the Inscription edition, this special C70 is set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month. It’s distinguished by such special features as a painted grille, polished black 18-inch wheels and an interior decked out in special leather trim and aluminum accents. We think it looks rather fetching.
Available with either a turbocharged five or a pair of diesels (in other markets), the Inscription edition can be had in black, black metallic or white. Have a closer look in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.

Edo Competition tricks out the Porsche Panamera S with Hellboy kit
Oct 25th
Filed under: Aftermarket, Sedan, Performance, Porsche
The Porsche Panamera doesn’t need much help in the performance department. Styling may be another matter, however. German tuning house Edo Competition has tackled both with its latest tuning kit.
Starting with the Panamera S, the package called Hellboy takes output from the 4.8-liter V8 up from 395 horsepower to 459 for a 4.6-second sprint to 62 and a 191-mile-per-hour top end. The rest of the package is rounded out with 21-inch alloys mounted to a suspension that’s been lowered by 30mm, plus a full carbon fiber aero kit and a retrofitted interior.
We’re not sure it helps the Panamera in the areas it needs it most, but juxtaposed to the, um, rather “decorated” girl with which it’s photographed in the high-res image gallery (pay special attention to the text on her legs), it’s suddenly looking quite tasteful by comparison. Details in the press release after the jump.

LG Optimus Slider on Virgin Mobile at CTIA E&A 2011, we go hands-on (video)
Oct 12th
Curiously enough, the prepaid market had as much of a field day at this week’s CTIA Enterprise & Applications as anyone else; we already got our fair share of hands-on time with the Samsung Transfix for Cricket, and shortly afterward beheld our eyes (and mandibles) on the LG Optimus Slider, the latest beauty making a beeline to Virgin Mobile as early as this coming Monday. Aside from the obvious slide-out QWERTY, the Android 2.3.4 device will feature a 3.2-inch HVGA display, a 3.2MP camera and microSD support up to 32GB, and will be available without a contract for $200. Head underneath to take a look at the full image gallery and hands-on video.
Zachary Lutz contributed to this hands-on.

Oct 12th
Filed under: Motorsports, Marketing/Advertising, India, Racing
You’d think that a racing team that was about to seal up the world championship would be focused entirely on the task at hand. But not Red Bull. That team’s got resources to spare, and was relaxed knowing that its own Sebastian Vettel was just one point away from the title heading into the Japanese Grand Prix this past weekend. So while Vettel and the rest of the team were at Suzuka, the team’s demo squad were in India for another feat.
Neel Jani, a Swiss driver of Indian ancestry, drove the 2005 RB1 that was converted for use by the demo team up Khardung La. The Tibetan mountain pass through the Himalayas is widely regarded (but often debated) as the highest-altitude drivable road in the world, so, suffice it to say, it made for different conditions than those to which F1 teams are accustomed.
The route took Jani and the RB1 up the hill more than 7,000 feet – from 11,000 above sea level to 18,830 – passing along the way the famous Thiksey Monastery and the Shanti Stupa shrine – both iconic sites to Buddhists around the world. See the results in the high-res image gallery.

Official: Citroën jacks it up with new C4 Aircross
Oct 2nd
Shortly after launching its new C4 hatchback, Citroën upsized it and took it upscale in the form of the DS4. For European buyers intrigued by crossover but not looking for the premium accoutrements, now there’s the C4 Aircross.
Like the DS4, the C4 Aircross looks better suited to tackling a wet cobblestone street in Paris than a mountain pass through the French alps. Powertrain choices include a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, ranging from 110 horsepower up to 150, with front- or all-wheel drive. Those 18-inch wheels measure 18 inches and, like the rear lights, draw their inspiration from the Hypnos concept car, while LED running lights are integrated into the air apertures up front.
Five occupants will also be able to appreciate the panoramic glass sunroof when the model launches in Europe early next year, but you can get the details now in the press release after the jump and eyeball the image gallery for a closer look.
