Nielsen: PS3 sees biggest year-over-year growth in streaming (and other such tidbits)
Mar 14th
In 2012, PlayStation 3 owners spent 23 percent of their time with the console streaming video-on-demand services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, according to the data-minded folks over at statistical aggregation station Nielsen. This is up nearly 10 percent from the amount that PS3s were used for that purpose in 2011. The surveyed time spent using the PS3 as a DVD/Blu-ray player dropped by four percent over the last year.
The information comes from a survey conducted between October of 2011 and October of the following year, which asertained how console owners aged 13 and over used their gaming devices. The resulting infographic, seen in full here, breaks it down.
The survey also tracked the amount of time that each console spent playing games online and offline, with the Xbox 360 seeing the most online performance (33 percent of time spent playing games) and the Wii experiencing the least at 11 percent.

Feb 13th
Hulu’s Kids Lock has already been implemented on Android, and now it’s time for the children-tailored, itty-bitty feature to make its way to iOS — well, at least to the iPad. It’s rather simple, really: Kids Lock essentially comes in the form of a virtual button on the app, allowing parents — or whoever’s in charge — to easily secure their tiny loved ones into the Hulu Kids experience. Meanwhile, getting back to the TV shows and movies watched by the bosses of the house is rather uncomplicated — all there’s to do is enter the account password and bam, all is golden and everyone can go back to watching Parenthood. Aside from Kids Lock, v2.7 doesn’t add too much more, save for a few bugs being fixed and some backend enhancements to make Hulu’s iOS application more stable overall.

Feb 12th
After making a stop at the FCC recently, Western Digital’s WD TV Play streaming media player got an official announce this morning. The Roku-esque streaming media box touts easy setup, a $70 price tag, and connectivity with a variety of apps (YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, SlingPlayer, Spotify, Pandora and Facebook are specifically named). The device can also manage and display your own media, via DLNA-friendly devices, all in 1080p. A remote control comes with the device, but there’s also a free WD TV Remote application headed to iOS and Android devices — you’ll need WiFi running to get the app synced up, of course.
The WD TV Play is already available for purchase via Western Digital’s online store, and there’s no word on retail availability. We’ve reached out to Western Digital to find out more.

Jan 8th
It’s been quite a few months since Diamond Multimedia announced it’s AMP1000 set-top box, so the company likely figured there was no better better time and place than CES 2013 to release its latest Android-based media offering. With the AMP2000, the multifarious company joins the likes of Roku and FAVI in the powered-by-Google streaming race — in which it’ll give potential users the ability to wirelessly view files on any HDMI-ready TV set, as well as offering support for applications like Hulu Plus and Netflix. Diamond Multimedia notes the AMP2000 comes “with Google TV,” though it doesn’t go into much more detail, and thus it’s quite unclear whether this means you get the actual Google TV experience — you know, the one found on devices such as that Vizio Co-Star — or if it’s something a bit more like Always Innovating’s HDMI Android dongle. Speaking of the lack of details, mum’s the word on how much the AMP2000 will run you when it ships “sometime in March or April,” but we can only imagine it to be around the same price as other similar offerings.

Jan 4th
Tired of gadgets fighting for bandwidth around your humble abode? Well, the outfit behind the Killer Wireless-N technology that we took a gander at back at E3 is looking to oblige. Qualcomm Atheros has unveiled its StreamBoost router technology with the goal of making in-home streaming experiences all the more enjoyable. By allocating optimum bandwidth to each device and app on a network, StreamBoost shapes and prioritizes the traffic stream to insure that your Netflix viewing of Sons of Anarchy gets ample attention. This also insures that intense gaming sessions won’t be interrupted by Hulu Plus or other apps jostling for a download thanks to a constantly updating bandwidth allocation. A user interface offers a hub for monitoring traffic and all of the devices / apps on a given network while a cloud-based service will increase router intelligence on the regular — automatically sorting new devices as they’re added. StreamBoost will be in action next week at CES, where Alienware and D-Link will be showing off the goods with routers built around Qualcomm’s VIVE 802.11ac WiFi technology. Until then, the full announcement resides just past the break.

Dec 19th
Nintendo announced this morning that its Nintendo TVii for Wii U will launch in the US and Canada on December 20. Nintendo TVii, originally intended as a launch application, enhances the console’s connectivity with the living room glow box. It provides a single navigable experience of cable and satellite shows, as well as on-demand services through the WiiPad.
Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant currently have separate, functional apps on North American Wii U consoles.

Dec 19th
Nintendo of America announced this morning that its delayed Nintendo TVii service for the Wii U will launch on December 20. Nintendo TVii, first introduced back in September, intends to tie all of your currently balkanized media services on the Wii U — various streaming services, your cable box, and your DVR — into a single, cross-searchable application. At launch, the service will tie in Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video, but Netflix and TiVo are skipping the party until some time in “early 2013.”
Nintendo TVii was given a December 8th launch date in Nintendo’s home country of Japan, lining up with the launch of the company’s new console; the TVii service notoriously missed the launch of the console everywhere else in the world, remaining absent ever after its various support services were added (Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, etc.) as individual apps. Like those apps, Nintendo TVii wasn’t built by Nintendo itself, but in a partnership with i.TV. It’s unclear what lead to the delay of the TVii service, but we’re glad to see it arrive ahead of the various big present-giving days.

It was six months ago that Hulu Plus made its official debut on Windows 8 PCs and tablets. Now, Windows Phone users are about to suffer a similar loss of productivity. The WP8 app will be available today as a free download, featuring unlimited streaming and Live Tile support — provided you’re willing to fork out the standard $8 monthly subscription, that is. In any case, it should be available shortly, so keep a lookout. And as for all you Windows Phone naysayers, this means you now have one less reason to, well, say nay.
