Just Posted: Sony SLT-A65 review
Nov 15th
Just Posted: our review of the Sony SLT-A65. When the SLT-A65 was launched it risked being overshadowed by the flagship A77 model. However, the A65 could prove to be the more significant camera in the SLT line-up as it offers many of the A77′s features at a more attainable price point. Offering 24MP capture, a 10fps continuous shooting rate, full-time live view with phase-detection AF as well as a raft of other innovative features, the A65 is unique in its market segment. On paper, it appears significantly more capable in some respects than peers such as the Canon EOS 600D / Rebel T3i and Nikon D5100. Click here to jump straight to the the review and see if it lives up to this promise.

The company made famous by the ubiquitous Flash Player and multimedia software like the Adobe Creative Suite has announced its plans to eliminate 750 full-time positions in attempts to reposition itself as a leader in digital media and marketing. In two separate press releases, Adobe gave a glimpse into the restructuring, which it will cover in-depth at a financial analysts meeting in New York tomorrow. The company expects the plan to result in pre-tax charges somewhere in the ballpark of $87 million and $94 million, a large chunk of which will come from expenses “related to employee severance agreements.”
According to one of the two press releases, the master of Flash plans to continue offering the Creative Suite as well as expanding “tablet-based touch apps” and cloud-based software. It’s also promised to invest further in HTML 5 through tools like Dreamweaver, the recently announced Edge and PhoneGap, which it acquired with the purchase of Nitobi. Despite the shakeup, Adobe expects to meet its previous Q4 projections of between $1.075 billion and $1.125 billion. A bunch of corporate what-nots await you in the dual press releases after the break.

Oct 13th
Google’s just announced its third quarter earnings and, as expected, the company’s numbers are continuing on the upswing (even beating expectations). That includes $9.72 billion in revenue, which represents a 33 percent jump compared to the third quarter of 2010, along with $2.73 billion in net income, which is up from $2.17 billion a year ago. Somewhat notably, Google also choose to lead off its press release announcing the financial results (included after the break) with the news that Google+ has just passed the 40 million user mark — the company further notes that “people are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate.” There’s not a ton of surprises to be found in the results otherwise, although Larry Page and co. sure seem to be busy hiring new folks — they’ve brought on 10 percent more employees in the span of three months (for a total of 31,353 full-time employees as of September 30th). The company’s earnings call is coming up shortly — we’ll bring you any additional details as they’re made available.

Sep 1st

Coincidentally, on the eve of Activision’s Call of Duty XP live event, IGN spoke with ex-Infinity Ward leads Vince Zampella and Jason West about their new studio, Respawn Entertainment, and the next best thing to major game reveals: Employee numbers. “55 full-time employees,” Zampella revealed, “and then we have some contractors [...] 4 or 5 people right now that are contracting.”
“That’s boring,” you protest. “What about the guns?” you demand. We know, we want to know all about the guns in Respawn’s game as well, but for now we’ve got to divine as much as we can from the crystal ball of employee headcount. “We’ll get bigger, but we’re slowing growing,” Zampella rhymed. “The trick there is it’s always just time versus size of the team. So you can take longer and have fewer people or you can get bigger and do some things faster,” West added.
If you’ll allow us to read between the lines here, it should be clear: Respawn is following the Nice & Smooth school of hiring, meaning its new IP won’t be coming out anytime soon if they hire slow … or it will, if they hire quick. “So if things have to take a little longer they could take a little longer,” West suggested, “and if we’re fortunate enough to find more awesome talent then we’ll do that.” So Q4 2012 then? 2013 maybe? We give up.
