Lenovo Live update outs ThinkPad X1 Hybrid, $800 Ultrabook plans
Nov 13th

Not so hip on the ThinkPad X1′s short battery life? Lenovo doesn’t seem too thrilled about it either, and are prepping to launch a new twist on the X1 sporting a battery efficient “Instant Media Mode” sometime this month. A recent Lenovo Live update dubs the refresh the “ThinkPad X1 Hybrid, and shows the rig rocking the same media interface as the IdeaPad K1. The Hybrid promises Windows 7 / Media Mode switching, instant-on convenience and enough juice to get you through eight hours of video playback or up to 10 hours of web browsing. The document also details plans to release 13 and 14-inch Ultrabooks in May starting at $1300 and $800, respectively, as well as the ThinkPad x130e — an apparent successor to the X120e, ruggedized and due in December. B&N launching Nook Tablet for $249 on November 16th, and we’ve got the dirty details
Nov 3rd
Sitting down? Good. Come November 16th, Amazon’s Kindle Fire will have company. We’ve wrapped our paws around a stash of documents confirming the impending launch of the first bona fide tablet in the Nook line, and lo and behold, the Nook Tablet will end up being a dead-ringer for the Nook Color that already exists. What we’re looking at is a 7-inch VividView IPS color touchpanel with a 1024 x 600 screen resolution (that’s 169 pixels per inch), a 1.2GHz dual-core OMAP4 processor, 1GB of RAM, dimensions of 8.1- x 5- x 0.48-inches, 16GB of inbuilt storage, a microSD expansion slot, roughly eight hours of battery life with WiFi switched off (that sinks to four hours with videos playing back), 802.11b/g/n WiFi and support for a smorgasbord of file formats including ePUB, PDF, XLS, DOC, PPT, TXT, DOCM, Flash, JPG, MP3, MP4 and AAC.
What’s looney is just how similar this thing is to the Nook Color, even in functionality; in fact, B&N simply says that it offers “everything the Nook Color [does] + the best in HD entertainment.” We’ve also confirmed that it’ll ship for $249 here in the States — a full $50 more than Amazon’s Kindle Fire. So, why does B&N think you’ll pony up the extra? For one, the Nook Tablet has twice the RAM and twice the storage compared to its closest rival, while also being lighter and having access to over two million books, magazines and newspapers. So, what say you? You’ll be able to pre-order your own on November 7th, and for those still dubious, in-store demonstrations will begin on the 15th.

Sep 26th
Gordon Murray Designs’ latest creation, the Teewave AR1, not only showcases the firm’s engineering capabilities, but also illustrates the point where integrity, lightweighting and electric drive meet.
On the day Project T.32 (the Teewave AR1′s codename) was primed for its Tokyo debut, the automotive world came to know a firm by the name of Toray Industries – one of the world’s leading manufacturers of carbon fiber. Looking around the AR1 reveals plenty of exposed carbon fiber, a visual link with the vehicle’s carbon fiber monocoque structure.
Everything – most everything, anyway – was done in-house, including crash testing. The AR1 was digitally designed, with no full-sized clays, says Frank Coppuck, the T.32′s engineering director.
A swiped Mitsubishi i-MiEV powertrain sits between the AR1′s rear axle and passenger compartment. And although the AR1 only packs a featherweight 63 horsepower and 133 pound-feet torque, its low 1,852-pound curb weight, track-honed double wishbone suspension, ultra quick steering and powerful brakes means it should be an engaging package.
“We could squeeze a lot more out of the engine,” says Coppuck, but as it is, the T.32 tops out at 100 miles per hour, has a listed range of 100 miles and recharges in around eight hours. We like what we hear, and think that the Teewave AR1 – screwy name aside – is one spectacular electric machine.
