Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories
Dec 28th
Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there’s signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that’s potentially very striking — and more than a little reminiscent of 2001‘s species-changing monoliths. There’s no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn’t be surprised knowing the company’s history and the Note II’s strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don’t expect any Starchildren as a result.

Nov 14th
Filed under: MPG, Chevrolet, LA Auto Show

On Wednesday, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The small hatchback has been tweaked for the North American market, and the hope is that the Spark takes off like wildfire with buyers. Chevrolet thinks the Spark will find favor with buyers living in cities, as well as first-time purchasers.
To that end, the entry-level Spark has been designed carefully. Obvious forethought went into the packaging of the virtually hidden rear passenger doors (not unlike its larger cousin, the five-door Sonic), and color choices with names like Salsa, Jalapeno, Denim, Lemonade, and Techno Pink are clearly aimed at a customer looking for something imaginative. Unique to our Spark will be a redesigned front fascia with distinct foglamp housings and airdam. The grille stretches further down the nose, too, and out back there are taillamps and bumper designs specific to the United States and Canadian markets.
Beyond the aesthetic alterations, important Spark details include a 1.2-liter dual-overhead cam four cylinder that spins 15-inch alloy wheels with 85 hp through a standard five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic. Chevrolet MyLink is available in the Spark with a seven-inch touchscreen. Mylink features Bluetooth phone integration, and Pandora or Stitcher can be piped through your smartphone and directly into Mylink. Standard air conditioning and power windows, along with a motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster (there’s that Sonic influence again) and color coordinated interior serve to spiff things up. It seems the message has sunk in that small cars don’t have to be brutally decontented.
Check out the press release after the jump, and stay tuned to our full-court-press coverage of the LA show, where we’ll get a chance to climb in and around the 2013 Chevrolet Spark and give you our firsthand impressions.

iPad 2 gets an $8 million Cretaceous makeover with dino bones, diamonds and gold
Oct 31st
In case you weren’t aware, Apple’s sold a whole lot of iPad 2s, so aside from the couple of bezel color choices or adding a Smart Cover, there’s not much you can do to make your tablet stand out from the crowd. Well, now there’s another option for the well-heeled gadget lover. Stuart Hughes is back with another custom gadget for the economic elites called the iPad 2 Gold History Edition. It’s got a solid gold backside, an Apple logo and home button crafted from a total of 65 flawless diamonds, plus a bezel crafted from Ammolite rock and slivers of thigh bone from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Between all that ice and prehistoric bling, there won’t be a problem picking this iPad out of a lineup. What is a problem (for most of us, anyway) is the price: eight million dollars. We dig the dino look and all, but that’s an awfully hefty entrance fee — we’d rather buy a stock slate and take a few dozen trips to the final frontier instead.

Nokia Asha 200, Asha 300 and Asha 303 hands-on (video)
Oct 26th
You know, Nokia wasn’t only revealing its first Windows Phone salvo — there was also a volley of series 40 handsets, with the Asha family. First up is the dual-SIM capable Nokia 200. The phone itself bears a strong resemblance to the C3-00, with a non-touchable screen and QWERTY keyboard, priced, pre-tax, at €60 (about $85). Nokia promises admirable battery-life and a rainbow of color choices.
Up next is the Nokia 300, pairing a 2.4-inch resistive touchscreen with a numbered keypad, with a long narrow frame very similar to last year’s Nokia C3, but now toting a 1GHz processor, five megapixel shooter and a €85 (about $120) bounty. Meanwhile, €115 (about $160) will net you the Nokia 303, which brings together both touchscreen and QWERTY input and rocks a 3.2 megapixel camera. While Nokia’s first Windows Phones remain the stars of the show, these sub-$200 prices and pre-2012 arrival will tempt residual Series 40 fans still out there. Skip on past the break for a brimful of Asha.

Oct 6th
Filed under: Car Buying, China, Europe, Japan, UK, Design/Style
When it comes to tastes in automobiles, Europeans and Americans tend to be on opposite sides of the spectrum. Small trumps big. Manual over automatic. Car against truck. Black versus white.
That’s right, automotive paint supplier PPG says 20% of new cars in North America were white in 2011, while black dominated Europe with 26%. The Asian market preferred the neutrality of silver, which colored 25% of vehicles sold there.
Truth be told, none of the three major global markets embraced any real colors, as white, silver, and black made up the top three in each region. In North America, the order was white-silver-black, Europeans had it black-white-silver, while Asians chose silver-white-black. White took over the top spot globally with, of course, silver and black tied for second. Last year, silver topped PPG’s list.
Perhaps the most important detail we found in PPG’s press release was this factoid: “40 percent of the automotive consumers said they would prefer a wider range of color choices.”
Read the entire release after the jump.

Official: 2012 Bentley Continental GTC goes topless as summer winds down
Aug 23rd
Bentley is currently in the middle of a product update that started with the all-new Mulsanne and has now moved on to the Continental GT. We’ve gotten up close and personal with the 2012 Continental GT Coupe on more than one occasion, but we knew that more derivatives lurked in the future. The next one is now here, and it arrives in the form of the 2012 Bentley Continental GTC.
Sharing the same lower lines as its sibling hardtop coupe, the GTC opts to let the sun shine in via a power-operated retracting softtop. Under the hood sits the same 6.0-liter W12 engine that produces 567 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque in the coupe. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the Continental GTC will run from 0-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. Keep your Church’s Warrik leather driving shoe pushed to the floor and 100 mph will pass by in 10.9 seconds as you proceed towards a top speed of 195 mph.
This second-generation Continental GTC boasts the same upgraded interior amenities as the coupe, including the (thankfully!) updated nav system, plethora of color choices and optional Naim audio. Twenty-inch wheels are the standard set, while 21-inch rollers are available as an option.
For those who have the means, Bentley is taking orders now, and lucky customers will take delivery towards the end of 2011. The rest of the world will get to see the car in person at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Official: 2012 Lexus CT 200h gets optional F Sport package
Aug 15th
Filed under: Car Buying, Hybrid, Hatchback, Lexus, Luxury
Lexus is cranking up the performance and visual appeal of its CT 200h for 2012 with the addition of an optional F Sport package available only on the Premium version of the hybrid hatch. The CT 200h F Sport gets a revised body kit with a meshed-out front grille, 17-inch high-gloss alloy wheels, metal front scuff plates, a perforated leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, aluminum pedals, optional perforated leather seats and some metallic trim on the dash. Lexus says the F Sport package also includes a re-tuned suspension, but there’s nothing here in the way of powertrain improvements.
In addition to F Sport, the 2012 CT 200h features what the Japanese automaker calls a “Vehicle Proximity Notification System,” which is Lexus speak for the almost-mandated pedestrian warning system that will soon be required on all hybrid and electric vehicles.
Finally, 2012 sees Nebula Gray Pearl appear in the exterior color category and Smoky Granite Mica vanish from the list. Additional color choices include Obsidian, Tungsten Pearl, Starfire Pearl, Matador Red Mica and Ultrasonic Blue. Who names these things?
Lexus has yet to release official photos of the U.S.-bound 2012 CT 200h F Sport, or official pricing for that matter. However, the Ultrasonic Blue hybrid hatch (see gallery below), unveiled at the Australian International Motor Show in October 2010, shows off most of the package.
