Cars.com $37,000 SUV shootout yields unexpected results [w/poll]
Oct 17th
Filed under: Car Buying, SUV, Crossover, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Toyota
Cars.com recently lined up seven new vehicles for a $37,000 SUV shootout. The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, 2012 Dodge Durango, 2012 Ford Explorer, 2012 Honda Pilot, 2012 Kia Sorento, 2011 Mazda CX-9 and 2011 Toyota Highlander all squared off against one another in a range of evaluations, including a one-day highway drive and family testing.
If you happen to be the deductive type, you may have noticed that the list above includes a fair number of genuine crossovers. Vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse and Mazda CX-9 bear little resemblance to the body-on-frame bruisers of old, and even models like the 2012 Explorer and 2012 Durango have evolved out of their traditional shells.
But when the dust settled, it was Honda’s 2012 Pilot that took top honors thanks to its high level of amenities, spacious interior and clever storage solutions, despite the fact that reviewers found issue with road noise and exterior styling. Perhaps most surprising is the fact that the 2012 Explorer tied for sixth place with the 2012 Sorento. Ouch. Head over to Cars.com to see the full evaluation, and vote for your favorite in our poll.

Dodge Charger Pursuit claims its victories in Michigan State Police tests
Sep 25th
Filed under: Sedan, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Police/Emergency
The Big Three are finally done one-upping each other in this year’s Michigan State Police vehicle evaluations, with the 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit V8 laying down some heady numbers on the test track. The Charger emerged with the fastest lap time ever recorded in the Michigan State Police test’s history, at 1:33.7.
That, boys and girls, is something else. The Chevrolet Caprice PPV may have the best top speed and braking, but the Charger has shown it has the chops to slice up the twisties as well. The Hemi-powered Charger also gets to 60 in under six seconds with the optional 3.07 gears.
The only strike against the Charger is that needed a V8 to post those numbers, while both the Chevrolet Caprice and Ford Interceptor employ less thirsty V6s. Full presser after the jump.

Video: PickupTrucks.com names Ram 1500 best truck for $30K
Sep 24th
Filed under: Truck, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Comparisons
PickupTrucks.com asked five half-ton truck manufacturers to provide their best trucks for $30,000. The entries consisted of the 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab, 2011 Ford F-150 Regular Cab, 2011 Nissan Titan King Cab, 2011 Ram 1500 Quad Cab and 2011 Toyota Tundra Double Cab, all of which were put through a variety of tests over four days in and around Detroit. Unlike a comparison that seeks model-feature parity, this one allowed for manufacturers to provide whatever they thought was best, which is how you get Ford supplying the only regular cab among the field.
After being run through load tests, brake tests, the drag strip, 0-to-60 and even an autocross run, the crown was given to the Ram 1500 Quad Cab. It didn’t scorch its competition, but it was always near the top of the field, which gave it enough to take the glory. There’s a video of the test after the jump, or head over to PickupTrucks.com to read the full piece.

Report: GMC back atop HD truck towing and payload ratings
Aug 16th
Filed under: Truck, Work, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GM, GMC
Mustang, Camaro and Challenger owners use statistics like 0-60 times and quarter-mile trap speeds to prove why their chosen muscle car is better than the rest. If there’s any other segment of the industry where numbers mean everything, it’s heavy duty pickups.
Need proof? Check out the latest set of towing and payload ratings for the HD versions of the Chevrolet Silverado, Ram, Ford F-Series and GMC Sierra. For what it’s worth, the GM twins officially have the highest set of numbers with up to 23,000 pounds of capacity when trailering a fifth wheel, 18,000 pounds with a conventional trailer and 7,215 pounds of payload capacity when properly equipped.
So, GM’s got the bragging rights… for now. We expect Ford and Ram to counter GMC’s latest statistics with revised ratings of their own, after a few small tweaks allow them to earn back their place atop the HD standings. After all, it’s been happening exactly this way for the last several years.
For a fun little rundown of how the three American pickup makers play the game of one-upmanship, we suggest you check out this story from our friends at PickupTrucks.com. Speaking of which, after that website’s latest HD pickup comparison, at least GM has earned the right to boast by taking top honors against the F-Series and Ram.

Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra earn IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards
May 12th
Filed under: Truck, Safety, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Nissan, Toyota
Like their body-on-frame SUV cousins, full-size pickup trucks are more prone to roll over than a standard passenger car. That’s exactly why it’s so important to have a vehicle that earns good marks in roof-strength tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just released the data on its recent volley of tests on full-size pickup trucks, and both the 2011 Ford F-150 and 2011 Toyota Tundra earned the coveted Top Safety Pick designation. The vehicles earned the highest possible rating of ‘good’ in the institutes crush test, where a large steel plate is pressed against one corner of the roof to calculate a strength-to-weight ratio.
Meanwhile, the 2011 Nissan Titan took home an acceptable rating in the rollover evaluation while the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, 2011 GMC Sierra and 2011 Ram 1500 netted marginal scores.
IIHS says that the roof on the Toyota Tundra stood up to 4.5 times the truck’s weight while the F-150 handled 4.7 times the pressure. A vehicle must withstand 4 times its weight before five-inches of crush is detected before being awarded a Good rating. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Jay Leno plays around with the cars from Fast Five
Apr 30th
Filed under: Coupe, Videos, Chevrolet, Dodge
Fast Five is the latest in the reinvigorated Fast and Furious franchise, and while the latest film adds Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (along with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel), the real co-stars are, as always, the cars. A whole new batch of wheels debuts in Fast Five, and Jay Leno took a firsthand look at some of them.
Movie car builder Dennis McCarthy brought a C2 Corvette Grand Sport replica, which features a 1980s Corvette suspension and a custom body by Mongoose. While many movie cars feature “fake” power, the Vette still packs 500 horses. And since this Vette was made for movie production, there are another nine copies, two of which sit on Volkswagen platforms to better handle some off-road stunts.
Beyond the Corvetteette, McCarthy brought a 1960s Dodge Charger with a gutted blower and a small-block Chevy underhood. Hit the jump to watch the 10-minute video, which features a few clips from the movie and some behind-the-scenes footage as well. At one point, Jay leaves his garage and heads over to McCarthy’s home turf, which shows more metal from Fast Five.
