Nokia to lock down access to Navifirm and early firmware images later this month
Jan 2nd
There’s some potentially bad news for Nokia users who were willing to dabble in untamed firmware releases via the company’s online repository. Navifirm, which has inadvertently offered several early glimpses of updates for Nokia hardware, will shutter open access to its firmware repository at the end of the month. Starting in February, the system will require a “Nokia Online” login for access to both application and device software downloads. The brief announcement doesn’t detail whether this would involve a standard Nokia account or something else, but it might mean fewer previews — and a slightly longer wait for subsequent (and official) Lumia updates.

With CES looming like an electrically charged storm of news and announcements, it’s time for us to give you our best bets on what you’ll see come January. During the month of December, we’ll bring you a series of CES preview posts, forecasting what you can expect when the news deluge begins. For more of what’s to come, check out our hub.
Looking for what’s going to be new in home theaters for CES 2013 is largely a good news / bad news situation. The bad news? The list of tech we’re expecting to see (Ultra HD — aka 4K / 8K, OLED, connected TV and second-screen interaction) is almost an exact mirror of the high-profile launches from last year’s show. The good news, however, is that there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic that this is the year we’ll actually see the technology become available and / or more useful in our daily lives.

Nov 10th
Okay so, we’ve got some good news and some bad news for people who pre-ordered their Wii U games from Amazon. The good news, as you’ve probably guessed, is that some games are already making their way to players’ homes, as is made evident by ultra-cool Joystiq reader Jerry’s copy of Black Ops 2, seen above. Technically, this game isn’t supposed to be out until Tuesday, and that’s for consoles that exist.
The bad news, unfortunately, is that the actual Wii U itself remains locked away in an Amazon distribution center somewhere until November 18. So, while it’s awesome that your game arrived before everyone else has the chance to buy it at retail, there’s not a whole lot you can actually do with it. Smell the manual, I guess?
[Thanks, Jerry!]

Why the Super Committee Could Make or Break a Year-End Rally
Nov 14th
I don’t know what it is about the American psyche that causes us to embrace deadlines so enthusiastically, but once again, we’ve become a nation on a countdown clock. And the bad news is, it’s only going to get worse as the first Super Committee deadline approaches 10 days from now.
Until then, with the help of a ticking digital reminders on every cable news channel, we will be barraged with wall-to-wall speculation and leaked progress reports over every imaginable outcome and scenario that this hand-picked panel of budgetary barons might approve.
To make matters worse, our sudden-death budget match will be running at the same time as the one in Europe, which itself, is in overtime trying to make tough decisions needed to remain solvent. And if that weren’t enough, the U.S. economic calender is about to spring back to life again after effectively hibernating for the
